One of the Regional Parks most popular programs is returning. ‘Go Fish’ kicks off on Saturday, April 24 in the Hall Road pond in Mission Creek Regional Park and Sunday, April 25 at the special fishing area in Shannon Lake Regional Park. The program then runs each weekend to June 6, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at the two locations.

The program offers youth under age 16 a chance to catch one rainbow trout each day without a fishing license. A limited number of rods, reels and bait will be available each Saturday and Sunday. Each Saturday, volunteers from the Lonely Loon Flyfishers Society, Kelowna and District Fish and Game Club and the Peachland Sportsmen’s Association will provide expertise for participants while each Sunday, Regional Parks staff will be on site to help youngsters try their luck.

On the grand opening weekend, barbequed hot dogs and refreshments will be provided courtesy the volunteers of the Lonely Loon Flyfishers Society and Peachland Sportsmen’s Association.

‘Go Fish’ is being offered with the generous support of the three organizations along with the Ministry of Environment, Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC and the Summerland Trout Hatchery.

‘In the line of Fire’ exhibit at the EECO

Central Okanagan residents certainly have had their experiences with wildfires. There was last summer’s triple-threat with the Glenrosa, Rose Valley and Terrace Mountain blazes and before that, wildfires ripped through Rose Valley Regional Park and in 2003 the monstrous Okanagan Mountain Park fire forced almost 30,000 people from their homes.

While wildfires can be fearsome and disastrous, they also are a rejuvenating part of our environment. You can learn more at the new exhibit opening April 24 at the Environmental Education Centre for the Okanagan or EECO. ‘In the line of Fire’ looks at the impacts of wildfire in the Okanagan.

The EECO is located in Mission Creek Regional Park, Springfield and Durnin Roads and is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
