Update (June 7, 2012). . . PeachlandNews.com received a press release from the District of Peachland about the upcoming skate park open house. The release included the following paragraphs:

“Over the years, a number of amenities have been added to help Peachland residents – including our children and youth – be more active such as the improvements at Swim Bay, the Centennial Way walkway and, most recently, two new playgrounds,” said Peachland Mayor Keith Fielding. “Now there is renewed interest in a skate park – a park where youth and people of all ages who use skate boards, in-line skates, BMX bikes and other wheels can enjoy. As a result, we are moving forward with plans to make this a reality.”

The proposed skate park at Lambly Park (next to the tennis courts) will feature a 5000 square foot park with design completed by September 2012. Construction is planned for fall 2012 to spring 2013, with the grand opening in summer 2013. The project will be funded entirely from the Community Amenities fund. These are funds provided by the development community to help us make improvements in public services – no local tax dollars are being used to construct the skate park.

“We have identified Lambly Park as the intended location for the youth skate park because it is the site that appears to best optimize all of the relevant selection criteria. However, if through the consultation or technical process Lambly Park appears to be unsuitable, or if a better option being identified (i.e. one that better optimizes relevant selection criteria), the matter will of course be reconsidered,” said Fielding.

The District of Peachland is seeking input on a new skateboard park and wants interested parties to attend an open house later this month.

The open house takes place Wednesday, June 20, from 6 to 8:30 pm. at the Peachland Community Centre. There will be a presentation at 6:30 p.m.

Peachland council has chosen Lambly Park as the location for a skate park and, according to a posting on the district’s website, it was the “best of six sites reviewed.”

The posting lays out a timeline for a skate park that includes design by this September, construction this fall and next spring, with a grand opening in the summer of 2013.

Interested stakeholders are also being sought to work directly with design company Newline Skate Parks and the district on design. Anyone interested can email projects@peachland.ca or call the recreation department at 250.767.2133.

why is it ok for tennis players to “risk” their lives playing right beside the highway? Perhaps we’ll need to find them a new tennis court somewhere too? Let’s give our kids some credit here, we are not talking about two year olds here. They manage to get to the mall in one piece without our assistance. They have just as much chance of getting hit by a car crossing Beach Ave to get to swin beach because drivers a gawking at all the kids swimming and playing as they do crossing the highway at our ” new controlled” crosswalk from the mall to the park. Our society is turning into “Nervous Nellies”. Give the kids some credit!

Well Lee, I’ve actually almost hit 2(seniors) people about a month ago who came out from their car. And guess what, they weren’t even falling off their boards. Besides the youth who do reckless things on occasion, there are reckless drivers who frequently are accident prone along this highway. Read the news. Every single day… People do more than 100 km faster on even this little stretch of highway than on Beach Ave. Can I really take you seriously when you say it is all right to tell your children to play along the highway. I’ve talked to seniors who hate the idea of having to deal with youth in “their” back yard (Cousins Park). I’m also just a little disappointed in the regard for safety by even a grand parent. I give the kids credit every day but at the same time I see them smoking, doing drugs, spraying graffiti, fighting, vandalism, drinking. The blatant disregard displayed by some is the reason why tragedies happen in this town. I always thought you were old school Lee, sorry for thinking that way.

Found this on the net…Stopping Distance For A Vehicle
Assuming proper operation of the brakes on the vehicle, the minimum stopping distance for a vehicle is determined by the effective coefficient of friction between the tires and the road, and the driver’s reaction time in a braking situation. The friction force of the road must do enough work on the car to reduce its kinetic energy to zero. If the wheels of the car continue to turn while braking, then static friction is operating, while if the wheels are locked and sliding over the road surface, the braking force is a kinetic friction force only.
Note that this implies a stopping distance independent of vehicle mass, and in this case, driver reaction time. It also implies a quadrupling of stopping distance with a doubling of vehicle speed.

For calculating minimum stopping distance, a value of 0.8 is a nominal value for the coefficient of static friction between good tires and a good road surface. Almost always, coefficients of kinetic friction are less, and are dramatically less for wet, icy, slick, sandy, dirty very smooth or oily surfaces. For many newer high performance tires with good tread, the coefficient of kinetic friction on a dry road surface may approach 0.8 if the braking is not so prolonged as to cause tire melting. You may wish to plug in a smaller value such as .7 or .6 for a vehicle with normally driven and worn tires. Poor condition tires might yield .5 or .4 for a closer representation of friction.

Using their calculator I used 40km/hr for Beach and 80 km/hr. for the hwy.

      40km/hr- 36.45ft./sec. ..stopping distance…25.83ft.
80km/hr.-72.91ft./sec….stopping distance..103.33ft. I like my chances of survival on Beach Avenue thanks.

Thanks for posting the link to the appropriate Peachland website page Mr. Preston. I can see the other sites have problems but unfortunately so does this one: safety

I’ve already had a conversation with a woman I met at the checkout at the IGA about the Lambley solution who told me that under absolutely no circumstances would she allow her children to play only a few feet from a highway where it is not unusual to see cars racing through at 20 klicks about the speed limit. She also implied she isn’t the only parent who feels this way. I asked her why she didn’t make her views known to the Council had her answer was quite revealing. ‘Why bother? They’ve already made up their mind and aren’t interested in what we think.’ Does sort of sum up the community’s feeling on so many issues doesn’t it?

  3. My 2 cents says:

    Oh Come-on!!
For years people have been complaining about having nothing in Peachland for youth. How scary is a skate park? Most communities have them and they are usually situated in a city park where the kids can get to them.
Do we need a referendum each time the mayor and council make a decision? We elected these people and expect them to make decisions on our behalf. That’s democracy not dictatorship!

Let’s get onto the next thing to complain about.

I’m just a little concerned about all the kids that will be running their board on the highway just waiting for one of the accident prone drivers to put them on front page. As if all the kids will use the crosswalk and wait to use their board until they get to the park. This is not a matter of a referendum but a matter of safety and last but not least, democracy. I’d like to see a park but in a place out of harms way… not on the highway. I won’t be sending my kids to go play on the “highway”. They talk about safety from the ball players. Well it’s just a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt now. How many young children come close to getting beaned by a ball? Elderly? Cars? Honestly- why couldn’t the park have been against the hill with a fence there? No one on the street are put in jeopardy and all the park users are safely guarded by a fence that no one will see. Between that and changing the diamond to the street side, oodles of safety. Obviously council (mayor) don’t have any regard for the safety of our youth. I thought this would have been a no brainer.
It’s almost coming down to having a referendum every time there is a decision made because most in the “know”, know which PERSON makes the decisions regardless of any and all opposition.
I really hate to say it but it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident. This is a very busy place in the summer time while everyone is in a rush, or coming down from a party up Princeton or just plain speeding. These are just a few examples of variables to disaster. In the best case scenerio, our children will be totally law abiding and use the crosswalk and not use their board along the highway. But that is like saying there are never accidents along highway 97 and we can trust every tourist and speeder. Also rest assured no semi truck will ever flip over or loose a tire.
My children mean everything to me and I trust them. I certainly won’t be telling them to “go play on the highway”. That will be our town slogan if there is ever an accident.

I hope people remember come election time and also when it is time to come down on the dictatorship when they want to give all that land away to his friends for the seniors complex.

Was just wondering whether this was a vote by all….or just the one.

  5. anon says:

No indication either here or on the Peachland website as to where exactly in Lambly Park they intend on building the skate board park. Or as Lizzy says, what the other options were. Usually strategy of keeping as many people in the dark and stressed for as long as possible is it?

    1. Dave says:

The district’s website does list five locations that were apparently looked at, plus Lambly Park equals six. They are about half way down the page: http://www.peachland.ca/cms.asp?wpID=296

      1. Ernie Hurd says:

….I read the other locations for the skate park. This is truly a whole pile of b.s. wrapped up in rhetoric so thick it looks like a London fog. I won’t even waste my time going to this public meeting. This meeting is a complete farse. It is to fool us in believing this council is open and transparent…….shame on you all. I hope this comes back to bite the council in their you know what…lmfao….

  6. Slick Lizzy says:

Peachland council has chosen Lambly Park as the location for a skate park and, according to a posting on the district’s website, it was the “best of six sites reviewed.”

Where were the other five locations purposed and who on council knows enough about the matter to make light of the pros and cons?
Still feels like a pacifier to quiet the youth.
What is the towns motives to push this into that area? Are they hoping that the surrounding houses come up for sale so more property can be purchased like downtown securing more potential seniors housing propert?
