An accident Saturday that caused a huge traffic backup on Hwy. 97 in Westbank injured two people and claimed the life of a marmot.
The accident took place about 4:45 p.m. and involved a single motorcycle that crashed on Hwy. 97 near the turtle pond south of Gorman Bros. mill.
“The driver apparently laid the bike down while attempting to avoid wildlife on the roadway,” said RCMP Cnst. Kris Clark.
The motorcycle driver and his wife, from Kelowna, were ejected from the bike.
“Both occupants slid about 75 metres, with the motorcycle continuing for another 200 metres before coming to rest,” said Clark.
The motorcycle driver and his wife suffered non-life-threatening injuries, however the body of a marmot was found at the point of collision.
Southbound traffic on Hwy. was backed up for quite some time after the accident. PeachlandNews.com received reports of traffic stalled back to the one-way couplet in Westbank.
