Homeowners have one month remaining to take advantage of the amnesty period for the legalization of secondary suites in the District of West Kelowna.
During the amnesty period, a $125 registration fee for the registration of secondary suites is being waived. The amnesty conditions do not exempt bylaw enforcement action with respect to illegal suites. The amnesty period is scheduled to expire on September 14.
Council originally adopted Zoning Bylaw amendments on September 14, 2010, allowing secondary suites as a permitted use in most residential zones. Council opted to create a one year amnesty period during which no registration fee would be charged. A year later, council opted to extend the amnesty period by a further 12 months.
In September, District of West Kelowna staff will provide council with an update on the municipality’s initiatives to legalize secondary suites and seek directions going forward.
Questions regarding the amnesty period or the secondary suite legalization process should be directed to the Building Inspections Department at 778-797-8820.
The municipality also provides information on secondary suites on its website. Visit districtofwestkelowna.ca and select Departments/Building and Regulatory Services/Secondary Suites
