Update (11:5 a.m.). . . A Vernon grass fire near the Greater Vernon Landfill is contained.

Crews were able to jump on the fire quickly and keep it from spreading beyond about a hectare in size.

Firefighters are battling another grass fire in Vernon.

The blaze is reported to be on the back side of the Greater Vernon Landfill in area referred to as the Commonage.

Access is being gained from Birnie and Commonage Roads, according to the Vernon Morning Star.

Firefighters from Vernon and Okanagan Landing are on scene and assistance has been requested from the B.C. Forest Service.

Just a week ago a grass fire in Vernon threatened homes in the The Rise neighbourhood.
